HISTORY: A few years ago a young man from Windsor, Ontario named Mike Droulliard joined our local VW mailing list, looking for help with a recently acquired 72 Riviera Camper. It needed help with just about everything. I recommended him to my good friend Dennis Jolliffe, who assisted Mike with rebuilding the engine and driveline. Mike spared no expense on the repairs, working long hours at minimum wage to afford top-of-the-line parts to be used in the reconstruction. The bus was relocated to Den's place in Erin, ON to be worked on. They built a 2L dual-carb engine with a beefy cam, hydraulic lifters, big-valve heads and rejetted solex carbs. No expense was spared in the drive to build it right. After a year or two Mike decided on a career in the military. He enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces and relocated to CFB Pettawawa, about 8 hours from home. Mike attended Buses Of The Corn 2003 with a very short haircut, but was driving a new Xterra instead of Murphy. Dennis continued to work on Mikes bus whenever he could afford the time. The engine was rebuilt and the driveline and steering were completely overhauled just before Mike shipped out for a tour of duty in Kabul Afghanistan last summer. The bus was stored in a barn at his uncle's house in Windsor, to await Mike's attention when he returned. FAST FORWARD: In June, 2005, a bunch of bus pilots are standing around chatting at "Blenders By The Falls", the bus campout (and Blender Drink Festival) that takes place in Niagara Falls the weekend of the June Jitterbug VW Show. John "JDD" Dillon suddenly remarks that it would be a nice idea to get Mike's bus done before he returns. We didn't come to a consensus then and there, but the idea rattled around in our brains for a few weeks and re-emerged in emails a few weeks later. Wanna read more? Click HERE |
